Mouth Lines – How To Get Rid Of Facial Lines Around The Mouth
Mouth lines that accompany age are often blamed on habitual facial expressions. In recent years, we have learned that smoking cigarettes contributes to the problem, not only because of the frequently pursed lips, but also because of the free radical damage done by the smoke.
Although habitual facial expressions may play a role in wrinkles and other signs of aging, free radical damage is now believed to be primarily responsible. Not smoking helps to prevent that kind of damage. But, there are other sources of free radicals.
Older sources will say that the sun causes 90% or more of all of the signs of aging. Newer sources will tell you that it is not really the sun that is to blame, but increased free radical damage caused by overexposure to it.
Free radicals are molecules naturally present within all of the cells of the body. Normally, they don’t cause any problems. Scientists have been able to see that the activity of those molecules becomes frenzied during UV exposure, in other words, when you are out in the sun.
When the radical molecules become frenzied, they cause tiny bits of damage to the cells. Eventually, you see mouth lines, age spots, sagging skin, roughness and similar problems.
When a person is young and in good health, there are lots of antioxidants in the skin’s cells. To be specific, a lot of coenzyme Q10 is present.
Sun exposure quickly depletes the skin’s COQ10. Researchers recently found that older people have less COQ10, anyway. Logically, the number of free radical molecules is much higher than it is in a younger person, because one of the jobs of the antioxidant is to neutralize the free radicals, before they can do any damage.
The solution, then, to mouth lines seems to be increasing the skin’s antioxidant content. Researchers have been working on that for years, sometimes with only limited success.
One of the problems is that COQ10 molecules are too large to penetrate the skin’s outer layers. Another is that taking the antioxidant by mouth does not increase the amount present in the skin.
A few companies have learned how to reduce the size of the COQ10 molecules, so that they can penetrate deeply. In one study, researchers saw a significant reduction in mouth lines and other wrinkles. It’s not the only anti-aging ingredient available. But, it is an important one.
